“Kau ternyata hanya bayangan saja,
Dari kenyataan
Aku tak ragu, meninggalkanmu
Lebih baik kusendiri”
(Bayangan Semu, sung by Margie Segers)
Ah, this climate change has provoked my sentimentality. This rainy year (we have continuous rain for almost eight month now!) brought my childhood memory back to life. The memory of quiet Jakarta with trees stood alongside of the river on the back of my house. No, no, don’t imagine Dawson Creek. My house was located in densely populated central Jakarta. But then the nighbourhood was still nice. We said hello to each other and visit each other once in a while.
My life as a kid was no extraordinary. Went to school, played with my friends. And I lived with my extended family: with aunties from my mother side and uncles from my father side. One aunty of mine liked Ebiet G. Ade so much that she never forgot to add “G. Ade” as her surname. The uncles loved Iwan Fals, of course, and God Bless. But they listened to songs from other singers as well. Two of the singers they liked to listen to was Rien Djamain and Margie Segers (I don’t know the relation of Rien and Margie Segers yet. Will find out soon, stay tune!)
Just a few days ago, I came across the songs from Rien Djamain in my collection. I was looking for songs that suit best the cloudy weather. Only cloudy, not gloomy. The songs somewhat brought the breeze into myself. To some extent, their voice sounds a tad like Maria Bethania’s of Bahia. The sound is thick, but a bit husky, and never failed a note! They seemed to sing with full control but easy going. Well, I’m not a music critic, only an admirer. I can’t describe it well. You better listen to them yourself and tell me what you think.
1. Rien Djamain dan Jack Lesmana - Hapuslah Air Matamu
2. Rien Djamain - Pergi Untuk Kembali
3. Margie Segers - Enggo Lari
4. Margie Segers - Bayangan Semu
Enjoy!
